In The Classroom

Event posters

The Event poster project was a capstone project for the course. The core areas of the project were the creation of images and the incorporation of typographic hierarchy. Students either selected an event from a list of Michigan festivals or choose their event to run by me. Students then used the design process to research the event, sketch out ideas for the poster, imagery to be used in the final project, and finally put all of the parts together into a final project. I ran the graphic design class as an advanced course and allowed students to use whatever materials they wished to accomplish the project.

Paper Figures Project

The paper figures project is an excellent example of how I combine concepts to create an interdisciplinary classroom. In this project, geometry and art collide to create stunning paper sculptures. I love how this project can be adapted to allow a student to make this project unique. I can also adapt to varying skill levels by allowing students to use templates or tracers.

Stained glass window project

The stained glass window project as an exploration into the many mediums of art. students used geometric shapes to construct an image of their choice. Students began the project by looking at a variety of stained glass windows. Then the class selected a theme to guide their creations, the class is shown here selected nature, then sketched out ideas, and finally began working on the final image. Students then had the option to coat their image in mineral oil to make the image transparent.

Lines to Shapes

Fourth Grade

Ryan Elementary School

This project was an opportunity for the student to explore the interrelationships of lines and shapes. To make this project more engaging, I used the largest paper available and made this a group project. Students loved creating surprising narratives surrounding their artwork.

Paper Robots

Fourth Grade

Ryan Elementary

This project was designed to get students thinking about the world around them. Students were required to brainstorm 3 jobs that they do not like to do. From that generated list students created a robot to do that task. This project was a fun exploration into the world of design. Classroom discussion is driven by the fact that robots are made to solve tasks, often that we do not like to do.

Cardboard letter project

The cardboard letter project is influenced by the artist Robert Indiana, famous for his large typographic and found media sculpture as a class we discuss alternative uses for materials and how the setting of artwork can elevate the overall reception of the artwork. This project also serves as a perfect entry point into the world of sculpture. Students begin drawing on cardboard then cut out the letters, paint, and assemble the final statue.
